Pictures to come, but it's been a grueling several weeks on the remodeling scene at our new place. My jobs, as I waddle around these days, have been limited to getting Jack out of the house for many many hours at a time. Also, I've been washing sippy cups in the bathroom sink and trying to think of alternatives to take out for dinner. Also I've been trying to clean, including the thick thick plaster dust from every surface.
Meanwhile, David has been working very hard. He did the destruction to the kitchen, including the old cabinets and the fake brick walls. He and my step-father (who is in his 70s) did the wallboarding and electricity in the kitchen. He restored the rusted out exhaust fan. Lowes put in the new cabinets. Now we are waiting for the countertops and the floor. (the stove, refrigerator and sink are dependent on these other things being finished)
Over this past weekend, David's good friend Russ flew in from Minnesota (they grew up together in San Jose, Calif. but neither lives there anymore). Russ and David spent the weekend framing the home offices in the basement. We'd gotten an estimate from some contractor to do the work. The labor alone was $1200 and the guy said it would take 3 weeks. When we finally got around to saying OK to the guy, he was no longer available until the Fall. Russ and David finished it in a day and a half and they did an AMAZING job.
I am hoping the kitchen will be finished by the time the new guy comes. It will be a horse race.
This reminds me of the story of how my dad and mom raced my mom's pregnancy to finish their dissertations. He won. Unfortunately my mom lost and it took her YEARS to finish it up after I came.
