Two years ago as we prepared for the birth of our long awaited child, the season of good new television came to an end and we were at a loss for how to occupy ourselves during our nightly zombie crash time. I don't know how or why, but somehow we stumbled upon a long forgotten show -- comfort food quality television from our childhoods in the 1970s: The Rockford Files.
If you haven't ever seen it, it is one of those hour long mystery shows. Rockford is the detective. He charges $200 a day plus expenses. He's an ex-con, wrongly convicted, who is always trying to do the right thing but who often just gets shit dumped in his lap. His response to this is very human. Annoyance.
His dad's name is Rocky. He has a buddy who is a lieutenant in the police department. Another hanger-on guy who is a con-man named Angel. Rockford has a good sense of humor. He lives in a trailer by the beach of what looks like Malibu, Calif. People are always coming there to beat him up for reasons Rockford doesn't discover til later in the show. He's a regular guy. He's chivalrous. He's charming. He is lovable. He is fallible.
Each show opens with his phone ringing, his greeting on his answering machine, and some annoying message left by someone or other that you know is going to make Jim Rockford grimace when he hears it.
If you have a DVR and are looking for something relaxing to watch over the summer, I highly recommend the Rockford Files.
We were totally obsessed for a while and even changed the ringtones on our phones to the Rockford Files theme song, which is very catchy, and apparently was once a top 40 hit. We've since returned to the modern era, but still enjoy the occasional episode. We love Rockford.
You are so cute to be so excited about this. :)
I can't take on any more shows. I'm trying to stop watching TV! I hardly have it on at all now, and it's great. My house is way cleaner.
